The annual Gloucestershire cheese-rolling competition takes place every summer at Cooper's Hill, just near where I grew up.
To attend, punters drive as near is possible to the event (roads around the event are closed on the day, and police line the area). On their long walk up the hill, they're greeted by families selling biscuits and squash. When they eventually arrive, they squeeze into a thin piece of land to the side of the hallowed competition slope.
It's a very deep slope – there's always a fair number of injuries every year. Entrants chase a round “cheese” (in recent years this has morphed into a fake lightweight version for safety reasons) down the perilous route. The “cheese” usually reaches the finishing line a lot faster than the competitors, who somersault and tumble as fast as they can – often straight into the hands of waiting medics.
